The plotter housing often is made of a combination of thin steel and sturdy plastic. The housing protects the fragile internal components of the plotter from damage and obstruction. It may be opened to allow access to the interior of the plotter by removing retaining screws on the back or bottom. Some units have a cover-retaining clasp that depresses, allowing the cover to lift up.
